FELLOWSHIP PLAN
The Push Button Memories: Landmarks Worldwide collection is an exclusively visual narrative of our familiarity with the documented sites. In my next project, These United Memories, 50 States 50 Landmarks, my plan is to document, both visually and in recorded interview, the elements that draw visitors to a particular landmark in a particular state. Unlike global destinations like the Coliseum or Buckingham Palace, I want to explore if traveling to a domestic landmark within a state carries an entirely different set of meanings for my subjects. Interviews will add to the insights gained by this project. The United Memories project will involve a significant amount of time, travel, and resources for both research and execution. This McKnight fellowship will provide critical support in the exploration and understanding of the project's key question: What brings people to particular places to make their memories?
